AI to accelerate Scientific Understanding

Joint Scientific Workshop by ELLIS Unit Berlin and BIFOLD – Exploring the Frontiers of AI-driven Research.

From May 26 to May 29, 2026, the ELLIS Unit Berlin and BIFOLD will host the scientific workshop "AI to accelerate Scientific Understanding" in Berlin. This event focuses on the transformation of machine learning models from mere "black-box" oracles into transparent scientific tools capable of communicating the reasoning behind their predictions to significantly accelerate discovery.

The workshop seeks to develop a systematic understanding of how the explanation and interpretation of AI models can enable research from both theoretical and applied perspectives. Renowned international speakers from disciplines such as molecular science, medicine, digital humanities, and geoscience (including experts from Oxford, MIT, and ETH Zurich) will discuss how AI can enrich research beyond validation and trust. The agenda includes invited talks, poster sessions, and dedicated time for interdisciplinary exchange.

The four-day program features an optional half-day tutorial providing a concise introduction to XAI (Explainable AI) tools, ensuring a low entry barrier for newcomers. The subsequent conference days foster high-level networking and collaboration between world-class scientists, local scholars, and students in an informal setting.
